Self Catering Holiday Cottage in Gower, Wales

Llanmadoc, NORTH Gower, wales

Upper Church Barn is opposite St Madoc church which looks out onto Whiteford Sands - a vast two mile expanse of beach at the edge of the Loughor Estuary.

The barn's light and airy space houses a downstairs bathroom, double bedroom and an open plan kitchen / diner and living room area. A spiral staircase (complete with stair gates top and bottom) leads to an upstairs double bedroom with an additional single bed and two single beds housed on the balcony overlooking the living area.

Accessed through Whiteford Burrows and Cwm ivy - a dune and pine plantation owned by the National Trust, the beach and surrounding area is classified as one of the many National Nature Reserves on Gower, and is only a 10-15 minute walk from the barn.

The community shop is a 5 minute walk and the local pub - the Britannia Inn - serving fantastic food is a 10 minute walk.

GET A FEEL FOR THE PLACE

Upper Barn is arguably one of the nicest places we’ve ever stayed in - and there have been quite a few. The barn has been converted in a modern and stylish way, yet has some lovely traditional touches. My favourite was the most gorgeous bunting and the wonderful old toy collection. Thankfully locked away though as there’s no doubt we wouldn’t have been able to prise the boys (25-55 yrs old) away from it. Even though the house was cold when we got there, plenty of electric heaters assured that we were warm and cosy in no time at all. The beds are comfy and the kitchen is superbly equipped. There was nothing at all we could’ve possibly asked for. The pub in the village is lovely and as other reviewers have already mentioned, the food is great. Be sure to book a table though, as the pub is tiny and gets booked quickly. Out of the local beaches Rhossili Bay was our and the dogs favourite. Beautiful, vast and unspoilt. Our break was perfect in every way, just not long enough and there’s no doubt we’ll be coming back.

Llangennith beach is the Mecca for surfing in Wales.

Perfect for beginners and the more advanced, Llangennith is a friendly environment and is big enough for everyone to have their own space and wave.

The Gower Peninsula became the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956. Covering 188 sq km, it was awarded its AONB status for its classic coastline (much of it is Heritage Coast) and its outstanding natural environment (33% is National Nature Reserve or a Site of Special Scientific Interest).
